Want Budget Travel? Be a Tourist in Your Own City

Exploring a new city is one of my favorite parts of traveling – wandering the streets, finding the best restaurants, discovering cafes and cute shops, visiting museums, memorials, and all of the “touristy” things as well as delving beyond the tourist hot spots and finding the “raw” part of the city.

Unfortunately, traveling to a new city isn’t always possible.

Exploring your own city, however, is totally doable.

When was the last time you properly explored your city? Ventured to an area outside of your normal path or checked out the places tourists go?

If it’s not possible to take a trip to a new city, play tourist in your own.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

What is your city known for?

Why do people come to your city? How many of those places have you been to or experienced? It can be easy to dismiss places as tourist traps but there’s a reason so many people visit. Check it out for yourself and you may be surprised.

Head to TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor is one of my favorite sites when I’m planning a trip. They show you the top suggestions for what to do in your destination and let you search by category or specifically for an activity or restaurant. Users are pretty active and the site allows users to leave reviews, most of which offer more honesty on a destination than you will find elsewhere.

Use Groupon

Sign up to receive weekly Groupon emails for great deals in your city.

Groupon often features discounts to restaurants, offering a great opportunity to try out that new restaurant down the street. They also send great deals for hotels and spas – which can be great if you want to go all out in acting like a tourist – as well as discounts on all sorts of activities. A great resource in general, even if you just want to save money on daily activities.

Stop at the places you always drive past. What do you drive (or walk) by on your commute each day? What do you point out to a visiting friend when you drive by?

“Oh, that’s…” A park? A museum?

Instead of going past, stop and explore.

Head to a new area of the city

Many times when we live in a city, we only live in part of the city. It’s a “you stay in your neighborhood, I’ll stay in mine” kind of mentality. Spend the day exploring a different neighborhood or suburb – wander up and down the streets and discover what makes that area different from your own. Ask your friends for suggestions but make it a point to explore and discover on your own.

You might just find your new favorite hangout.

Playing tourist in your own city might not be quite as exciting as traveling to a new one but it can be just as fun (and way cheaper).

Bonus – you can do it any time, whether it’s a long weekend, a day off, or just a free evening.
